The Veterans Administration uses certain criteria to grade the severity of closed traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Parameters:
(1) initial Glasgow Coma Score (GCS)
(2) loss of consciousness (LOC)
(3) length of alteration of consciousness (AOC)
(4) length of post-traumatic amnesia (PTA)
(5) neuroimaging findings

Variants:
(1) an older version says that LOC for moderate TBI was up to 6 hours rather than 24.
(2) focal neurologic deficits may be included
