Description

A neonate born to a mother with myasthenia gravis may have transient symptoms of myasthenia gravis.

Clinical findings:

(1) The mother has myasthenia gravis.

(2) The neonate has symptoms that may include:

(2a) severe hypotonia and weakness

(2b) respiratory failure

(2c) difficulty swallowing

(2d) ptosis

(3) The symptoms usually resolve within the first few months.

To cross the placenta the antibodies would have to be IgG. The IgG antbody in the neonate's blood should be the same as that in the mother.

MG due to anti-MuSK is associated with more severe findings in the neonate and a longer clinical course.
