Description

Some patients who have been transfused have developed delirium.

Situations where post-transfusion delirium has been reported:

(1) orthopedic surgery

(2) pediatric critical care

The outcome in some studies was delirium OR coma. These are interesting endpoints to choose and perhaps separating them may be informative.

The risk of delirium increases with the increasing dose of blood transfused expressed in mL per kg body weight.

Correlation does not equal causation. The risk groups are high risk for delirium, and it is hard to control for all of the covariates. Still a person who has been transfused should be watched for signs of delirium.
