Description

Some infectious diseases can produce fulminant infections that are contagious to those who come in contact with the patient. In such situations the transport of the critically ill patient requires specialized containment stretchers and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the health care workers involved in the transfer.

Infections requiring patient isolation:

(1) hemorrhagic fever with Arena, Bunya or Filo viruses

(1a) Arena: Argentine (Junin virus), Bolivian (Machupo), Brazilian (Sabia), Lassa, Venezuelan (Guanarito)

(1b) Bunya: Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever

(1c) Filo: Ebola, Marburg

(2) orthopoxvirus infections: monkeypox, variola (smallpox)

(3) pneumonic plague, until the sputum cultures are negative

(4) an unknown, virulent communicable disease pending diagnosis

(5) biological warfare-related infection, known or suspected

Equipment required for transfer:

(1) sealed transfer stretcher: HEPA-filtered ventilation maintaining negative air pressure

(2) PPE for health care workers: impermeable suit with HEPA-filtered respirator attached to the hood providing positive pressure and equipped with two-way radios.

(3) infusion sets and other equipment with no or minimal sharps generation.

(4) cargo plane or other transport capable of handling the stretchers
