Suction applied to the anus can result in significant bowel injury. Exposure may be the result of an accident, a prank or a dare.
Suction may be encountered in a pool, spa or hot tub:
(1) at the suction port for water filtration
(2) with a skimmer used to remove debris
Application of suction to the anus can result in:
(1) intestinal prolapse
(2) intestinal evisceration, which may include small bowel
(3) intestinal perforation with peritonitis
(4) lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage
Risk factors:
(1) single suction port
(2) no port cover or one poorly designed
(3) high level of suction
