The Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society developed a consensus (TASC) classification for atherosclerotic disease of the aorta and iliac arteries.
Parameters:
(1) unilateral vs bilateral
(2) length in cm
(3) number of lesions
(4) site of involvement in common iliac or external iliac arteries
(5) involvement of common femoral artery
(6) aortic involvement
Type |
Lesion |
1 |
single stenosis on left or right side, < 3 cm, in CIA or EIA |
1 |
single stenosis on left and right side, < 3 cm, in CIA or EIA |
2 |
single lesion on left or right side, 3-10 cm in CIA or EIA, not extending into CFA |
3 |
total of 2 stenosis, 3-5 cm, in left and right CIA or EIA, not extending into CFA |
4 |
unilateral left or right CIA occlusion |
5 |
bilateral (left and right) 5-10 cm stenosis of CIA and/or EIA, not extending into CFA |
6 |
unilateral (left or right), EIA occlusion not extending into same side CFA |
7 |
unilateral (left or right), EIA stenosis extending into same side CFA |
8 |
bilateral, (left and right) CIA occlusion |
9 |
unilateral (left or right), diffuse, multiple stenoses involving CIA, EIA, and CFA |
10 |
unilateral (left or right) occlusion of both the CIA and EIA |
11 |
bilateral (left and right) EIA occlusion |
12 |
diffuse disease, aorta and both left and right iliac arteries |
13 |
stenosis of left and right iliac arteries with aortic disease requiring surgery (aortic aneurysm, other) |
where:
• CIA = common iliac artery, EIA = external iliac artery, CFA = common femoral artery
• Type 7 maybe should have been occlusion of the EIA rather than just stenosis.
