Description

Employees and other persons at risk should be trained about the organization's Emergency Action Plan (EAP). In addition, training drills can help to reinforce the lessons learned.


Training should involve:

(1) new hires or arrivals

(2) existing personnel

(3) those with special responsibilities

(4) temporary workers

 

Topics:

(1) information about the various types of emergencies

(2) familiarity with evacuation plan and routes

(3) options of fleeing, hiding or fighting

(4) organizational policies

(5) emergency communications

(6) interaction with first responders

(7) how to recognize conditions that may result in an emergency

(8) special duties

 

Periodic drills can reinforce the learning, especially when conducted with law enforcement. This may include:

(1) becoming familiar with the sounds of gunfire or the smell of smoke

(2) handling a fire extinguisher

(3) using the evacuation routes

(4) setting up an emergency response center

(5) providing first aid

(6) familiarity with various alarms

 

Training and drills should involve all shifts and weekend workers.
