Description

Vanadium is a metal used in steel production, as an ocidizing catalyst and in variety of industrial products. Most adverse effects are a result of industrial exposures.

Periodic table: Group V, subgroup A

Atomic weight: 50.95

Atomic number: 23

Vanadium oxides:

(1) VO (hypovanadous oxide) or V2O2

(2) V2O3 (vanadous oxide, vanadium trioxide)

(3) VO2 (hypovanadic oxide) or V2O4

(4) V2O5 (vanadic oxide, vanadium pentoxide)

Exposures:

(1) Most occupational exposures are related to exposure to dusts and can be avoided by respiratory protection.

(2) Exposures may be mixed with other chemicals such as chlorine and sulfuric acid.

Clinical findings may include:

(1) chronic cough (from mucosal irritation and bronchitis) and/or bronchospasm
