Exposure to jet fuels can have a number of adverse effects.
In military aviation these are referred as Jet Propulsion (JP) fuels, with JP-5 and JP-8 in use.
In civil aviation fuels are referred to as A or A-1.
Composition:
(1) kerosene
(2) large range of additives to provide a specific effect
Sources of exposure:
(1) inhalation
(2) dermal contact
(3) ingestion
(4) splash into eyes or mucous membrane
Acute effects:
(1) respiratory tract irritation
(2) otitis externa with vertigo
(3) allergic reaction to an additive
(4) cerebral dysfunction
(5) skin irritation
Long-term effects:
(1) neuropsychiatric effects with chronic exposure
(2) myelodysplasia
(3) skin cancer
