4,4'-Methylenedianiline (MDA) is a chemical used in a wide range of industrial and chemical applications. Exposure may cause acute and chronic toxicity to humans.
Chemical group: diphenylmethane
Use: production of 4,4'-methylenedianline diisocyanate and other polymeric isocyanates. These may be used in epoxy resin curing agents, polyurethane, coatings and plastic fibers.
The most important reaction is a toxic hepatitis which presents with jaundice.
Acute exposure may be associated with:
(1) irritation to skin, eyes and lungs
(2) vomiting
(3) loss of appetitie
(4) fever and chills
Other adverse effects may include:
(1) allergic contact dermatitis
(2) cardiomyopathy
Possible adverse effects may include:
(1) bladder cancer in humans. The chemical is carcinogen in animals.
(2) bone marrow toxicity
An industrial exposure may be indicated by the presence of yellowish discoloration to skin, hair and nails.
