Description

An active volcano may release a variety of toxic gases that can be lethal at high concentrations.

The most important toxic gases are sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

Other toxic gases include:

(1) carbon dioxide

(2) carbon monoxide

(3) methane

(4) hydrochloric acid

(5) carbon sulfide

(6) carbon disulfide

(7) hydrogen fluoride

(8) hydrogen bromide

(9) heavy metals

(10) hydrogen

In addition to being toxic, some of the gases are explosive while others are corrosive.

Vog is an acidic haze created by the mixture of sulfur dioxide and water vapor.

Differential diagnosis:

(1) inhalation of volcanic ash

(2) steam
