Description

A garbage dump or landfill contains a wide range of materials. Some can generate toxic gases that can make working nearby hazardous.

Sources of toxic gases and atmosphere:

(1) fire and its combustion products

(2) hazardous chemicals improperly disposed of

(3) anaerobic decomposition of organic waste

(4) chemical reaction between waste materials

(5) volatile materials if environmental temperatures high

The hazard is greatest for workers at the site, especially for those in close proximity and when disturbing the disposal area.

Air monitoring should be performed when risk is high.

Personal protective equipment may be needed if toxic gases are detected.
