Description

N-3-pyridylmethyl-N'-p-nitrophenylurea (PNU, brand name Vacor) is a rodenticide that is toxic to human. Although it was removed from the market in 1979 it may still be encountered.


 

Synonym: pyriminil

 

Sources of exposure: accidental, suicidal

 

Clinical findings:

(1) vomiting and abdominal pain (early)

(2) ketosis-prone diabetes mellitus, which may be permanent

(3) autonomic neuropathy (orthostatic hypotension, etc)

(4) peripheral neuropathy

(5) retinopathy (affects the retinal pigment epithelium)

 

Oral L-tryptophan or nicotinamide may serve as antidotes if administered soon after the ingestion.
