Description

The total number of normal, motile sperm in an ejaculation can be used to assess a man's fertility.

total motile functional sperm =

= (volume in mL) * (sperm density) * (per cent motile) * (per cent normal morphology)

Interpretation:

• The normal is > 40,000,000 per mL

Infertile males may show:

(1) reduced volume (< 3 mL)

(2) reduced motility (< 25%)

(3) reduced numbers (< 20,000,000 sperm per mL); however, count alone is not a determinant, since males may be fertile with low counts
