The femoral head of a total hip arthroplasty may become dislocated if certain risk factors are present.
Risk factors for a prosthetic femoral head dislocation:
(1) high preoperative range of motion
(2) revision surgery
(3) posterior surgical approach
(4) small femoral head size
(5) poor surgical technique
(6) first 4-8 weeks after surgery (associated with soft tissue and muscle weakness)
(7) poor compliance with activity restrictions
