Adams et al originally reported the total contusion index (TCI) to describe the total extent of cerebral contusions at autopsy. This was subsequently modified by Omalu et al. The authors are from the Allegheny County Coroner's Office and Abakaliki Teaching Hospital (Nigeria).
The contusion index for each region evaluated ranged from 0 to 12.
There are 10 scored regions:
(1) right frontal lobe
(2) right temporal lobe
(3) right parietal lobe
(4) right occipital lobe
(5) left frontal lobe
(6) left temporal lobe
(7) left parietal lobe
(8) left occpital lobe
(9) brainstem
(10) cerebellum
where:
• The TCI of Adams et al included a region for cortex around the Sylvian fissure.
total cerebral index =
= SUM(score for each region)
Interpretation:
• minimal score: 0
• maximal score: 120
