The formula of Pace and Rathbun can be used to estimate the total body water from the lean body mass.
total body water in kilograms =
= (lean body mass in kilograms) * (percentage of lean body mass as total body water) =
= (lean body mass in kilograms) * (0.73)
where:
• 73% is a higher percentage than other estimates of total body water based on body weight (see following sections). In many adolescents and adults the amount of adipose tissue increases with age.
• According to Skelton (1927) adipose tissue is 10% water. Gregory et al (see below) say that fat is anhydrous.
