Description

Heianza et al developed a score to screen for undiagnosed diabetes in Japanese adults. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Japan and TOPICS refers to the Toranomon Hopital Health Management Center.

Patient: Japanese adult without known diabetes

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) gender

(3) body mass index (BMI)

(4) family history (siblings, parents) of diabetes

(5) current smoking

(6) hypertension (systolic blood pressure > 140 mm Hg OR diastolic blood pressure > 90 mm Hg OR medical treatment for hypertension)

total score =

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

X =

= SUM(points for beta coefficients) - 6.59

probability of diabetes =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 16

• The higher the score the greater the risk for diabetes.

• A score >= 8 was considered positive for the screening test.

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.77.

• For a score >= 8 the sensitivity was 73% and specificity 68%.
