Description

Ralston and Myatt reported a number of equations for estimated the weight of a small child based on body measurements. Three are related to estimates based on weight stratified by mid upper arm circumference (MUAC). The authors are from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda and Brixton Healy in Wales.

Patient selection: child 6 to 59 months in a limited-resource setting.

The mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) reflects acute malnutrition.

Parameters:

(1) mid upper arm circumference in mm

(2) height in cm

MUAC

Acute Malnutrition

< 115 mm

severe

115 to 124.9 mm

moderate

>= 125 mm

no or mild

Normal or Mild Acute Malnutrition (MUAC >= 125 mm)

estimated weight in kilograms =

= 7.0724 - (X / 0.8196)

X =

= 12.8984 - (0.1769* (height))

If this is rearranged and consolidated:

estimated weight in kilograms =

= (0.2158 * (height)) - 8.665

Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MUAC 115 to 124.9 mm)

estimated weight in kilograms =

= 11.7344 - (X / 0.8537)

X =

= 19.2019 - (0.2202 * (height))

If this is rearranged and consolidated:

estimated weight in kilograms =

= (0.2579 * (height)) - 10.7582

Severe Malnutrition (MUAC < 115 mm)

estimated weight in kilograms =

= 8.2778 - (X / 0.8779)

X =

= 13.7884 - (0.1802 * (height))

If this is rearranged and consolidated:

estimated weight in kilograms =

= (0.2053 * (height)) - 7.4283
