Tongue splitting is a form of body modification in which the distal tongue is split along its midline. It is potentially dangerous and can be fatal.
Complications may include:
(1) infection
(2) hemorrhage
(3) scarring
(4) change in speech (atypical fricative consonants)
(5) lingual nerve damage
(6) airway obstruction
It may be illegal to perform the procedure on another person unless it is done by a physician.
