Description

A toddler or small child may be injured when trying to use the toilet.


Patient selection: from 1 to 6 years of age

 

Types of injuries:

(1) fall-related for toddlers

(2) penile or scrotal crush injury associated with a raised seat falling (penile slam syndrome)

(3) contact dermatitis

(4) other trauma to the external genitalia for males and females

 

Examination may show:

(1) contusion

(2) laceration

(3) hematoma

(4) abrasion

(5) rash

 

Risk factors for falls while toileting:

(1) using a toilet as opposed to a potty chair

(2) being unsupervised

(3) having immature motor skills
