Sometimes a patient with thyrotoxicosis may develop an anemia that responds to control of the thyrotoxicosis.
Clinical features:
(1) thyrotoxicosis
(2) onset of anemia after onset of the thyrotoxicosis
(3) variable pancytopenia
(4) correction of the anemia after control of the thyrotoxicosis
(5) exclusion of other causes of anemia
Possible mechanisms:
(1) autoantibodies targeting erythropoiesis
(2) autoantibodies targeting erythrocytes (AIHD)
(3) vasculitis with hemolysis
4) ineffective iron utilization
