The thymic index can be used to estimate of the volume of the thymus gland.
Analysis: sonography or CT scan
Parameters:
(1) area of the largest lobe in the sagittal (longitudinal) view
(2) maximum transverse width of the thymus
thymic index=
= (width) * (area)
The thymic index at birth increases with the body weight.
