A patient with eosinophilia may be at risk for thrombosis.
Pathogenesis: may be related to release of major basic protein (MBP) from eosinophil granules, which may inhibit thrombomodulin function
Conditions with eosinophilia and thrombosis:
(1) parasitic infection
(2) hypereosinophilia
(3) Churg-Strauss syndrome
(4) transient eosinophilia
Additional risk factors for thrombosis:
(1) hypercoagulable state
(2) intravascular device or other risk factors for vascular thrombosis
The thrombosis may be arterial or venous and occur many sites (retina, portal vein, etc).
