Description

The response of a patient with osteoarthritis to a therapeutic intervention can be determined using the criteria of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI). While the study involved patients with hip or knee involvement, the criteria can be applied to osteoarthritis in other sites.

Parameters:

(1) pain

(2) function

(3) patient's global assessment

A patient is considered a responder if one of the following is present after therapy:

(1) the improvement in pain is high

(2) there is at least moderate improvement in at least 2 of the following:

(2a) pain

(2b) function

(2c) global assessment

If the patient does not meet the criteria for responder, then s/he is classified as a nonresponder.

If a 100 mm VAS is used to gauge symptoms, then the response can be scored in terms of Normalized Units (NU), with 1 mm on the VAS scale = 1 NU.
