Description

Yanagihara developed a grading system for evaluating palsy of the facial nerve. This can be used to monitor the recovery in function over time.


 

Evaluations:

(1) appearance at rest

(2) wrinkle forehead

(3) blink

(4) light closure of eye

(5) tight closure of eye

(6) closure of the eye on involved side only

(7) wrinkle nose

(8) whistle

(9) grin

(10) depress lower lip

 

Versions:

(1) 3 level rating scale

(2) 5 level rating scale

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 40

• A favorable outcome is a score >= 36 by day 99 from the onset of palsy.
