Description

WeeFIM is an instrument for evaluating a child with developmental disabilities. It is modeled on the FIM instrument used for rehabilitation in adults. The instrument can document real changes in a child's functional abilities over time.

Proper training is recommended for appropriate administration and rating. Tools such as polar graphs (see Figure 1, page 1319) are available for tracking change over time .

Domains (6):

(1) self-care (6 items)

(2) sphincter control (2 items)

(3) transfers (3 items)

(4) locomotion (2 items)

(5) communication (2 items)

(6) social cognition (3 items)

Rating is based on a 7 point Likert scale ranging from 7 (total independence) to 1 (total dependence).

total score =

= SUM(points for all 18 measures)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 18

• maximum score: 126

• The higher the score, the more independent the patient.

percent ability =

= ((patient score) – 18) / 108 * 100%

Performance:

• The instrument shows excellent validity and interrater reliability (interclass correlation coefficient > 0.95).

• All 5 indices of responsiveness showed reliable changes over time.
