Description

The Tonsil and Adenoid Health Status Instrument is a parental survey indicating the impact of tonsil and adenoid disease on a child's health. It is composed of 6 subscales measuring different aspects of disease-specific health status. The authors are from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.


 

Instructions to parent: Please answer these questions remembering the past 6 months for your child. The questions relate to the problems many children have related to their tonsils and adenoids. Please do not skip questions or leave any questions unanswered.

Subscales:

(1) eating and swallowing (2): 12, 14 (range 0 to 8 points)

(2) airway and breathing (4): 1, 7, 11, 13 (range 0 to 16 points)

(3) infections (3): 2, 8, 9 (range 0 to 12 points)

(4) health care utilization (4): 3, 4, 5, 6 (range 0 to 16 points)

(5) cost of care (1): 10 (range 0 to 4 points)

(6) behavior (1): 15 (range 0 to 4 points)

 

Subscales scored from 0 to 100%

 

Interpretation:

• minimum scores: 0

• maximum total score: 60

• maximum subscale scores: from 4 to 16

• The higher the score, the greater the interference with health.

 

Performance:

• The authors found the instrument to valid, reliable and sensitive.
