Description

A definition for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) was proposed at a conference held in San Diego during January, 2004.


 

Criteria - all of the following:

(1) sudden, unexpected death

(2) infant < 1 year of age

(3) apparently during sleep

(4) unexplained after a throrough investigation (exclusion of other explanations, see below)

 

Thorough investigation includes:

(1) a complete autopsy including pertinent laboratory studies

(2) review of clinical history

(3) review of circumstances of death
