The Probability of Death Score (PODS) was developed by Somers based on the Injury Severity Score. The author is from Odense University Hospital in Denmark.
Parameters:
(1) highest abbreviated injury scale (AIS) code (from 1 to 5)
(2) second highest AIS code (from 1 to 5)
(3) age in years
(4) correction factor C, based on the type of accident
Category Accident |
Value for C |

motorcycle with helmet |
-0.812 |
moped with helmet |
-2.70 |
car with seat belt |

where:
• The term C is derived from the proportion of fatalities in trauma patients with an AIS score from 1 to 5 (see page 252).
• Since AIS code 6 are always fatal, the score applies for AIS scores from 1 to 5.
PODS =
= (2.2 * (highest AIS code)) + (0.9 * (second highest AIS code)) - 11.25 + C

= (2.7 * (highest AIS code)) + (1.0 * (second highest AIS code)) + (0.06 * (age in years)) - 15.4 + C
probability of death =
