Description

The Physicians' Humanistic Behavior Questionnaire (PHBQ) is an instrument completed by a patient to evaluate the perceived behavior shown by the physician towards the patient. It consists of 25 statements related to the patient-physician interaction and was initially designed to evaluate residents. The questionnaire was developed at the Fitzimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado.


 

The instrument consists of 25 statements about how the patient viewed the doctor's behavior.

Directions for statements:

• forward: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 25

• reverse: 3, 11, 17, 18, 24

 

total score =

= SUM(points for all 25 questions)

 

average response =

= (total score) / 25

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 25

• maximum score: 125

• The higher the score, the greater the perceived humanistic behavior shown by the doctor.

• The score shown by a physician may vary depending on the clinical setting (clinic, emergency department, inpatient services).
