Description

A classification of temporal bone fracture depends on whether or not the fracture violates or spares the otic capsule.

Patient selection: temporal lobe fracture

An otic capsule violating fracture is one the courses into or through the cochlea or labyrinth.

Otic capsule violation is associated with a higher risk for:

(1) facial nerve paralysis

(2) CSF otorrhea
