Description

The Obsessive Compulsive Drinking Scale is a self-rating instrument that measures some of the cognitive aspects of alcohol craving and which may be useful in assessing the severity of alcoholism and treatment outcome.


 

The instrument consists of 14 questions.

 

Responses are from 0 (normal) to 4 (very abnormal)

Interpretation:

• maximum score: 40

• minimum score: 0

• scores correlate with alcohol craving, alcohol dependence and alcohol consumption, with higher scores indicating more severe affliction

• scores after treatment correlate with abstinence, "slip" drinking and relapse drinking, with abstainers showing lower scores and relapsers showing higher scores
