Description

The MEDFICTS ( M eats, E ggs, D airy, F ried foods, I n baked goods, Convenience food, T able fats, S nacks) is a short dietary questionnaire to assess adherence to a Step I or Step II diet for reducing serum cholesterol.


 

Food Groupings:

(1) Group 1: foods high in fat, saturated fat and/or cholesterol

(2) Group 2: foods lower in fat, saturated fat, and/or cholesterol than Group 1

Each category (meats, eggs, dairy, fried foods, baked goods, convenience foods, table fats, and snacks) and group (Group 1 or 2) and scored based on weekly consumption and serving size:

 

Frequent use of foods high in fat or saturated fat, such as coffee creamers or whipped toppings are noted.

 

score for each category =

= (points for weekly consumption pattern) * (points for serving size)

 

total score =

= SUM(scores for each MEDFITS category)

 

Interpretation:

• total score for compliance with Step I diet: 40-70

• total score for compliance with Step II diet: < 40
