The Extended Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (eMRCD)

The extended Medical Research Council Dyspnoea (Dyspnea, eMRCD) scale subdivides the highest level into two groups.

Patient selection: stable dyspnea

Outcome: limitation due to breathlessness

Breathlessness	Grade
only with strenuous exercise	1
when hurrying (walking fast) on the level	2
when walking up a slight hill	2
walks slower than peers	3
stops after walking at own pace on flat/level surface	3
stops after walking 100 meters	4
stops after walking a few minutes on a level surface	4
homebound, independent in washing and/or dressing	5a
homebound, dependent both washing and dressing	5b

where:

• Dependence in activities of daily living may partial (needs assistance) or complete (unable to do anything on own).
