Spanier developed the Dyadic Adjustment Scale to measure the quality of a relationship between two persons who are married or cohabiting. There are 4 subscales measuring features important for a successful relationship. The author is from Pennsylvania State University.

(1) degree of agreement (15 items)

(2) frequencies (7 items)

(3) intimacies (2 items)

(4) events (4 items)

(5) problems (2 items)

(6) happiness (1 item)

(7) future (1 item)

 

Subscales:

(1) dyadic consensus: items 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 (maximum 65)

(2) affectional expression: items 4, 6, 29, 30 (maximum 12)

(3) dyadic satisfaction: items 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 31, 32 (maximum 50)

(4) dyadic cohesion: items 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 (maximum 24)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 0

• maximum total score: 151

• The higher the score, the better the relationship.
