Description

The Douleur Aigue du Nouveau-ne (DAN) is an acute pain rating score for neonates based on observation of behavior. It shows good inter-observer agreement and high intercorrelation of items.

• facial expression intensity is based on one or more of the following: eye squeeze, brow bulge, nasolabial furrow

• limb movement intensity is based on one or more of the following: pedals feet, toes spread, legs tensed and pulled up, agitation of arms, withdrawal reaction

= SUM(points for the 3 measures)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0 (no pain)

• maximum score: 10 (maximum pain)
