Description

The Danish Prostatic Symptom Score (DAN-PSS-1) can be used to measure the severity and impact of uncomplicated benign prostatic hyperplasia. It can be used to monitor the response following medical or surgical interventions. The authors are from 5 hospitals in Denmark.

There are 12 symptoms, each of which has a question (see Table I, page 46 Flyger et al).

(1) hesitancy

(2) weak stream

(3) incomplete emptying

(4) straining

(5) daytime frequency

(6) nocturia

(7) urge

(8) urge incontinence

(9) painful voiding

(10) postmicturition dribbling

(11) stress incontinence

(12) overflow/seeping incontinence

Measures for each symptom:

(1) severity

(2) frequency

subscore for each symptom =

total score =

= SUM(subscore for all 12 symptoms)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 108

• The higher the score the greater the symptom severity.

• A patient usually shows satisfaction with an intervention if there is a reduction in the number of symptoms showing moderate and major bother.
