The Choking Game is an international risk-taking phenomenon usually practiced by children and adolescents. Videos on YouTube and reports on social media induce people to participate.
Goal: hypoxia-induced stimulation with brief euphoria
Participants: A person may be acting alone, with a partner or a small group. It may or may not be part of a sexual encounter.
Mechanism: noose or hands
Complications:
(1) damage to the larynx and upper airway
(2) cerebral hypoxia with deficits
(3) death
Risk:
(1) novice
(2) trying it alone (a partner offers the chance of resuscitation)
(3) excessive pressure
Exclusions: suicide or homicide
