The Cape Town Index is a simple measure of activity in Crohn's disease, which can be used over time to monitor disease activity in a patient with Crohn's disease. It was developed at the University of Cape Town.
Parameters: 9 clinical and 1 laboratory:
(1) diarrhea
(2) abdominal pain
(3) well-being
(4) local complications
(5) systemic complications
(6) temperature
(7) body weight compared to last weight
(8) abdominal mass
(9) abdominal tenderness
(10) hemoglobin in g/dL

where:
• The addition of the ESR (in mm during first hour, scored 3 points if > 40 mm, 2 points if > 25 and <= 40, 1 point if > 15 and <= 25, or 0 if <= 15) did not improve the correlation with the Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI), described above.
Cape Town index =
= SUM(points for the 10 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 1 (the footnote in Table I says the minimum score is 0, but 1 point is the minimum points for diarrhea as written. The probable situation is that 0 or 1 stool per day is not diarrhea and is scored 0. One point would be assigned for 2-4 stools per day.)
• maximum score: 30
• The higher the score, the more severe the Crohn's disease activity.
Purpose: To use the Cape Town index to assess disease activity in a patient with Crohn's disease.
Specialty: Gastroenterology
Objective: severity, prognosis, stage
