Description

O'Leary et al developed a brief questionnaire for evaluating a man's sexual function. This can help a clinician quickly identify a patient who may require a more in-depth assessment. The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Definition of male sexual drive: Includes wanting to have a sexual experience (masturbation or intercourse), thinking about having sex, or feeling frustrated due to lack of sex.

Inventory: 11 questions

(1) sexual drive: 2 questions

(2) erections: 3 questions

(3) ejaculation: 2 questions

(4) problem assessment: 3 questions

(5) overall satisfaction: 1 question

Responses are from 0 to 4, with 0 poor and 4 good sexual function.

inventory score =

= SUM(points for all 11 questions)

subscore for sexual drive

= SUM(points for questions 1 and 2)

subscore for erections

= SUM(points for questions 3 to 5)

subscore for ejaculation

= SUM(points for questions 6 and 7)

subscore for problem assessment

= SUM(points for questions 8 to 10)

subscore for overall satisfaction =

= (points for question 11)

Interpretation:

• minimum total score: 0

• maximum total score: 44

• The higher the score, the better the man's sexual function.

Performance:

• The subscores were found to show discriminant validity.

• Concern about ejaculate volume did not correlate with sexual dysfunction, with many patients not knowing or caring about this.
