Description

Soler-Cataluna et al modified the BODE (Body Mass Index, Obstructive Airflow, Dyspnea, Exercise Capacity) Index for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The authors are from Hospital General de Requena, Centro de Salud de Lliria, and Hospital La Fe in Valencia, Spain.

The BODEx replaces the walking testing of the BODE index with the number of acute exacerbations.

Patient selection: male with COPD, stable without exacerbation in the past month

Parameters:

(1) body mass index [BMI = (kilograms body weight) / ((height in meters)^2)]

(2) FEV1 as percent of predicted

(3) dyspnea, measured using the MRC dyspnea scale

(4) severe exacerbations requiring ED visit or hospital admission (AECOPD) in past year

Interpretation:

• minimum index: 0

• maximum index: 9

• The higher the index the worse the prognosis.
