Description

A tablet needs to remain intact during shipping and handling. A friabilator is a rotating instrument that measures the friability of tablets.

The friabilator consists of a rotating plexiglas chamber with a curved baffle that allows tablets to undergo a controlled drop. A specified number of tablets are placed in the chamber which rotates at a constant speed for a specified time period.

Criteria for durability:

(1) resists breakage and crumbling

(2) resists abrasion, as measured by change in weight before and after testing

tablet weight loss in percent =

= ((tablet weight before) – (tablet weight after)) / (tablet weight before) * 100%

Interpretation:

• Weight loss < 1% is considered adequate resistance to abrasion.
