Description

The testicular biopsy score count is a rapid method to assess spermatogenesis in testicular biopsies.

Procedure:

(1) Usually only one testis is biopsied and handled carefully.

(2) All tubular sections in one section of the testicular biopsy are scored.

(3) The examination is usually performed with a 10x objective.

Score 10: complete spermatogenesis with many spermatozoa; germinal epithelium is organized with a regular thickness leaving an open lumen

Score 9: many spermatozoa present but germinal epithelium disorganized (with sloughing)

Score 8: only a few ( < 5-10) spermatozoa present

Score 7: no spermatozoa but many spermatids present

Score 6: no spermatozoa and only a few ( < 5-10) spermatids present

Score 5: no spermatozoa, no spermatids, but spermatocytes present

Score 4: only a few ( < 5) spermatocytes present

Score 3: spermatogonia are the only germ cells present

Score 2: no germ cells but Sertoli cells present

Score 1: no cells in the tubular section
