Discontinuation of the physician-patient relationship must be done according to protocol. The patient can terminate the relationship ("fire the physician") fairly easily.
Requirements for a patient terminating the relationship with a physician:
(1) The patient notifies the physician that the relationship has ended. This may be one or more of the following:
(1a) verbally telling the physician (preferably in front of witnesses)
(1b) in writing
(1c) by requesting transfer of care to another physician for the same or a related condition
(2) This is documented by the physician in the patient's record.
