Description

Kowalchuk et al reported the Temporomandibular Internal Derangement Score (TIDS) to evaluate a patient with a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder based on changes seen on MRI. The authors are from Rochester General Hospital, University of Rochester, and the University of Virginia.

Patient selection: temporomandibular joint disorder

Evaluation: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Parameters:

(1) joint effusion

(2) disc displacement

(3) disc nonrecapture (disc displaced with mouth closed and remains displaced with mouth open)

(4) disc degeneration

(5) abnormal condylar translation

(6) condylar arthritis

Response

present

subscore for left side =

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

subscore for right side =

= SUM(points for all 6 parameters)

total score =

= (subscore on left side) + (subscore for right side)

Interpretation:

• minimum subscore and total score: 0

• maximum subscore: 6

• maximum total score: 12

• Invasive procedures were more likely for bilateral diseaes with TIDS > 6.
