Rubin et al described a technique for determining the length of catheter to insert into the umbilical artery of a neonate. The authors are from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Patient population: Caucasian from 27 to 40 weeks of gestation
Goal: insertion of the catheter tip to between T6 and T10
Parameters:
(1) length from the xiphoid process to the pubis in cm
(2) length from the pubis to the mid-umbilicus (at the abdominal wall) in cm
(3) length of the umbilical stump in cm
length of the catheter in cm =
= (distance from xiphoid to pubis) + (distance from xiphoid to mid-umbilicus) + (length of the umbilical stump)
