Teardrop cells are red blood cells that resemble a tear or raindrop.
Synonym: dacrocytes
Teardrop cells look like a teardrop, with one side coming to a point and the opposite side rounded.
Occurrence:
(1) myelofibrosis or other myeloproliferative neoplasms
(2) myelophthisic anemia
(3) myelodysplasia
(4) beta-thalassemia major
(5) iron deficiency
