Description

Hyperphosphatemia may occur in patients with chronic renal failure and is associated with development of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Control of calcium and phosphorus serum levels can help prevent some of the metabolic and cardiovascular complications experienced by patients with chronic renal failure.

calcium * phosphorus product =

= (serum calcium in mg/dL) * (serum phosphorus in mg/dL)

An elevated calcium-phosphorus product is associated with:

(1) visceral and vascular dystrophic calcification

(2) increased cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients

Target

Desired Level

serum phosphorus

3.0 to 5.0 mg/dL

calcium * phosphorus product

< 55 (mg)^2 / (dL)^2
