Description

Jones et al proposed the addition of T and N values from the TNM classification for head and neck cancers to give a TANIS (T and N Integer Score) stage. Synderman and Wagner found this better than the TNM stage for predicting 2 year disease free survival in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity.

TNM classification:

• T codes (simplified): 1, 2, 3, 4

• N codes (simplified): 0, 1, 2, 3

TANIS =

= (T category from TNM) + (N category from TNM)

Interpretation:

• minimum TANIS: 1 (T0, N0)

• maximum TANIS: 7 (T4, N3)
